As with any training program, even animal rescue, you occasionally run into an individual that is extremely smart, very capable but insist on becoming the memorable class clown.     One of the very special things about animal rescue is the opportunity that you receive to meet animals that have all of the reasons to give up but instead chose not only to survive but excel. A case in point is one of our new graduates, a five month old female German shepherd named Katy. This girl came to us totally hairless, malnourished, weeping sores, parasite infested and totally committed to kicking the hell out of her past life. Ms. Katy got this name because she reminds me of a young lady I know that has also made a decision to face life with this same determination and grit.     Please welcome Mr. Ernie to the ranks of the new graduates from our rehabilitation, socialization and training programs. Ernie is a coal black, male, German shepherd, about 18 months in age and that is now 64 pounds but will probably attain a weight of between 70 and 75 pounds. Our boy is very sweet, totally enamored with people of all ages but seems to excel with children. Ernie also does well with other dogs showing openness to approach, common respect and a confident presence. During our training sessions we found Ernie to be alert, focused, extremely intelligent and always willing to work. Probably one of the most endearing attributes of ... Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Rowdy is a male one and a half year old Chihuahua / Rat Terrier Mix. He is approximately 14lbs with a moderate activity level. He is neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. He is a funny little guy. He is timid with humans at first, but warms up very quickly. However, with dogs it is a different story. Rowdy wants to play, play, play!! He does not care how big or small he wants to get in on the action. He will bark a little if he gets squished in the action, but it is just because he is saying 'Hey, guys I am down here playing too, watch where you are stepping! Then he jumps right back in the action. He is a little scared of loud ... (Read More)noises, and will retreat to his kennel if he hears one. However, he does not stay there long, because he is very curious and wants to know what is going on. He is not crated too frequently, but has done very well for the few hours he has been crated. He is crated when he rides in the car, because he is so small, and has done just fine. Rowdy did not really enjoy the leash at first, but now he is tolerating it just fine. He has darted out of the fenced in yard before, because he is so curious, but did not go very far and was very humbly picked up and brought back in. He has not been around cats before. Rowdy has done well with his foster mother's grandchildren ages 2-4. Animal ID: RDV 517JULIE (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

JULIE'S SOUTHERN FOSTER TELLS US: Julie was my foster dog while she was down south. She is a very intelligent girl that loves to entertain herself with toys. She loves to play with other dogs once she gets to know them. Part of her job every day was to make rounds with me around the farm to check the goats and horses. She was very well behaved around the livestock. Sometimes she would ride the ATV with me but mostly she would run alongside of it. She LOVES to run and would make an excellent jogging companion. She also loves to swim! She likes to figure new things out and picks up on training fairly quickly. Our family loved the time we were ... (Read More)able to spend with Julie. She will make an excellent addition to a family Julie arrived on December 6th a noon and is experiencing what many rescue dogs experience with the many changes now has taken place in her life. She spent 2 days ALONE in a crate with 60 other dogs barking, bouncing and hearing many other noises that she has never heard before. Then, she is taken from the crate in the truck into a new home with other dogs and people she has never met before. Information overload is the main cause of adoption failure so we require that our dogs have a 15 day quarantine with not contact with anyone outside the family household to help them adjust. There are three things in life that make humans grow up, death of a parent, going to jail and moving-yes moving is right up there with death of a parent-dogs go through the same emotional adjustment. With the help, love and guidance of the foster, the dog that arrives, is not the same dog in 6 or 7 days, however, what Julie is going through in the last 12 hours is the moving experience. It is important to remember that all things are new and new rules have to be learned, such as where to eat, don't eat off of the counter, how to eat, go to the bathroom, where to sleep, walk on a leash etc, this needs to be introduced very very slowly over a 15 day period. Her southern foster mom tells us that she just loves her 'sweet face and her favorite thing to do was traipse through the woods and swim in the pond---if that is your favorite thing to do, well sounds like Julie is a your perfect match.PLEASE GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, SEE MORE PHOTOS, AND INFORMATION ON THE DOG: www.rescuedogvillage.com (Less)

Golden Retriever Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Beautiful Blaze had a bit of a rough start to her life. She was picked up by Winnsboro animal control when she was approximately 2 months old. This pound is almost always at capacity, and the constant noise of the kennel took a toll on Blaze, she became stressed due to the noise and confinement to her pen. Blaze then went to a foster home where she escaped, but never left the property. It was over a mo514nth before her foster was able to touch her and coax her to come inside. She never once snapped, but was absolutely terrified and trembled with fear. That is when the rescue decided to contact a handler experienced with dogs that have been ... Our boy Adam is big, energetic, strong, energetic, beautiful, energetic, happy, energetic, loving, and energetic and did I mention that he was an energetic puppy. All kidding aside Adam is a wonderful portrait of the breed in all aspects, graceful, presence, athletic, intelligent, warm nature and an unshakable protective instinct. Chihuahua Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

UPDATE FROM THE FOSTER: Gadget just finished heartworm treatment. She is very happy to be out of confinement where she has been for the last 35 days. She can now go out to use the bathroom off leash and runs circles around our yard. She has become more playful in the few months that I have had her. She loves to sit in my lap and slap at me with her paws and catch my hand with her mouth! She is very gentle in doing this. She will also push a tennis ball across the room with her nose. She is still sleeping in the bed with me at night and loves to snuggle under the covers in a cute little Gadget ball. When out and about in the house she is ... (Read More)usually in her bed which is placed under our computer desk. She has quiet a collection on sweaters now too! Because Gadget is only 8 pounds she tends to get cold easily during the late fall/winter weather so we accessorize. OH! She is a total trip junkie! She loves to ride in the car. She will sit on a seat or in a crate if made to , but her favorite spot is in my lap. The little problem that she first experienced with fear of thunder storms and loud noise seems to have fixed itself. During our last few storms she has not had the shaking problems. She simply goes to her bed or finds comfort in a humans lap. I have never been a fan of small dogs. I have always preferred large dogs but little Miss Gadget has changed me, I love my small girl and hope she finds a home that offers her as much love as we have. Gadget is a female Chihuahua mix that is approximately 3-4 years old and weighs 8.4 lbs. She is spayed and up to date on shots. Unfortunately, this precious girl is heartworm positive. She will begin her treatment next month. She will be able to travel north the first part of December. Gadget was picked up by animal control in Winnsboro, Louisiana when someone called about a 'vicious' dog entering the city. Once her 5-day hold was up and volunteers had a chance to assess this beautiful girl, they discovered she was quite the opposite. In fact she absolutely loves people! However, this girl has experienced some trauma in her street life. Volunteers noticed that she has a large scar that runs over one back hip and the opposite back foot. She also has a slight turn out of one front paw. This doesn't slow Gadget down at all; it just adds to her Southern Charm. .PLEASE GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, SEE MORE PHOTOS, AND INFORMATION ON THE DOG: www.rescuedogvillage.com (Less)

Animal ID: RDV508HANK (male)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

UPDATE FROM SOUTH: I had the pleasure of 'babysitting' Hank for two days. I have to say he is an awesome and well adjusted little doggie. He entered my home that has 9 dogs ( personal and foster) with no reservations. He played well with all of my dogs. They range from an 8 pound Chihuahua to a 80 pound bulldog. He snuggled in my bed with the rest of my pack like a member of our group. Hank will make a great addition to any family. Imagine being in the middle of the desert on an extremely hot day. No sign of food and water for miles, you have no idea when your next meal will be, or if you will ever eat again. This was essentially how Hank ... (Read More)was found; by a young girl getting off the bus, who happened to have a huge heart. She saw that Hank was extremely frail and weak ,picked him up and carried him all the way to her house, where she and her mother worked together to begin Hank's rehabilitation. Hank is a male 14 lb Chihuahua mix and is approximately 1-2 years old, he is neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. He has been de wormed and is in the process of being dewormed again. Hank does well in a car and on leash, and is in the process of being house trained. He also does well in a crate. Hank has done well with people of all ages. Although he typically does not pay much attention to children, if they are willing to give him lots of love and affection he is happy to oblige. He enjoys playing with other dogs, but is a bit unsure about kittens and cats. He has not acted out aggressively towards any felines, but tends to shy away. Hank is a submissive dog who just wants to be with people and given affection. An ideal home for Hank would be one where his new owners would be home more often than they are not. As you can imagine his life was quite lonely before and he wants to make sure he will never be left alone again. Hank has a moderate energy level, and enjoys running around, but prefers to be on the couch next to his people. He is still a little frail so he needs lots and lots of healthy treats and food to get him back to an ideal weight. Hank would do well in almost any family as long as they were willing to let him snuggle up on the couch and give him lots of attention to assure him he will never be abandoned again. If his new home were to have children it is recommended that they are over the age of 8, as Chihuahua's have very fine bones and can be easily unintentionally injured by a small child.     FROM THE FOSTER: Daphne is being fostered with me here in WNY and has been here for 4 weeks. She is the most lovable little girl around. She basically just wants to be held all the time. She loves to sleep in my lap or sometimes she gets in the chair behind me and goes to sleep. She craves human touch. She has become fast friends with my 2 yr. old Aussie mix and they just love each other. Daphne wasn't sure how to play when I first got her but my Callie was persistent in teaching her what to do with a ball and a squeaky toy and a Pepsi bottle. They play constantly now. Daphne knows sit, down, crate, wait and leave it. She is very food ... (Read More)motivated so she is easy to train. She has a ton of energy but my Callie helps to wear her out. Daphne loves to ride in the car with her head hanging out the window which is a huge step for her as she wouldn't even get into my car when I first picked her up. She walks good on a leash, she loves going to doggie daycare and the dog park where she runs like she has never been able to run before. The girls at daycare quickly fell in love with her and they said she just loves everybody, both canine and human. She is house trained but doesn't know how to let you know she needs to go out so we just keep her on a schedule and it is working out fine. She doesn't seem to mind cats as the people downstairs have cats and she shows no interest in them when they are in the windows. She does well with kids but I have not had her around kids under 7. She is fine with both men and women. She will make somebody a very lovable and faithful family member. Daphne is my new foster girl here in WNY. She is just the sweetest little girl and so very beautiful. She loves to be loved. She would kiss your face all day if you let her. She is house trained, crate trained, leash trained, good on a tie out and is great in the car. She loves to go to the dog park and run like crazy with whoever will run with her. She was fast friends with my 2 yr. old Aussie and they both love to be outside. They love to play so my house is like romper room when I am home. Although they do play hard, they both settle down when asked. Daphne goes to daycare once a week and has become a fast favorite of the girls there. They say she is an awesome little girl who gets along with everybody. She loves my landlords 10 yr. old and also my neighbors' pre-teen daughters and husband. She seems to love everybody and anybody. Daphne is a smart little girl and is food motivated so will be easy to train. She knows 'sit' and 'crate' and is getting pretty good at 'down' and 'leave it' and 'wait'. I am amazed at how quickly she is learning things. She is still a puppy so lots of chew toys are a necessity to keep the house in one piece. She knows where the toy basket is and only takes things from there. When she is in the car she stays in the back seat and when her head is not hanging out the window, it is resting on one of my shoulders. She is a good girl and will make the right person/family very happy one day. I am so glad someone seen the potential in her and pulled her from an uncertain future. PLEASE GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, SEE MORE PHOTOS, AND INFORMATION ON THE DOG: www.rescuedogvillage.com Daphanie is a 35lb spayed female Catahoula cur. She is approximately 9 months old. She was picked up down south inside the city limits of Winnsboro, Louisiana by animal control. A group of volunteers from Patrick's Pal's (our partners down south) noticed the beauty and potential in this sweet girl; they decided to pull her from city pens this past July. At first she was so scared, the animal control officer could not get her to come out of her kennel. However, with a little love and patience the volunteers were able to convince her; she has grown more and more confident each day under the loving care of her southern foster! She was a bit underweight when she came into rescue, but is now at an ideal weight. She is in excellent health, up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm negative. (Less)

Our girl was rescued from a back yard breeder that intentionally stunted her growth by breeding her too early and with holding food.     SOUTHERN FOSTER TELLS US: Hi My name is Andrea and I am Lisa's southern foster. She lives with me,my husband , my 9 month old son and 4 other dogs (and often more when I have more fosters) on my 40 acre farm in Louisiana. She gets along well with all of my dogs. She enjoys running and playing with the other dogs! Lisa is full of life and energy. She is looking for her loving forever home! What is it that dogs have that human's lack? Lisa and her two siblings previous owner discarded them and left them to fend for themselves. They were found on a cold, winters night at the edge of the woods in January 2014. They were cold, wet, and were only ... (Read More)a couple of months old--in human years, they were three months old. Our southern partners are committed to the dogs, they never give up on them and never ever hesitated to spare any expense to save them---so for 243 days-come rain or shine, they came even when they were sick, even when they had a busy day, took Lisa and Mugsy to the vet, gave them a bath, walked them, made sure they had clean water daily, gave them their medication and lots of love-they are true hero's.     As with all 1-year-old German shepherds one must have the time, commitment and patience to give to the dog if excellence is desired. Our training and specialization programs have revealed that Kansas is very capable of adapting to almost any scenario but his desire to be with a family is most strong. As is with all of our wards Kansas is very comfortable on the leash is adept at his basic commands and possesses wonderful house manners.     What is most remarkable about Venus is how she struggled with her health and survived but not without leaving a toll on her. She sometimes stays by herself because love and attention is so new to her; she doesn't know what she is supposed to do or if it is going to stay in her life. We can all identify with that feeling and understand that it will take time for her to know that her new family will love her for her whole life. Right now she is happy lying in the shade, chewing on a bone and watching the activity of the other dogs in the yard; her expressions tell us that she is learning that life can be happy.     ADOPTION PENDING - UPDATE TO THE FOSTER: Hi, this is Kristi - Sally's foster mom in Louisiana. Sally is a BEAUTIFUL girl!!! The pictures just do not do her justice. She is long and lean - I call her Long Tall Sally. She has such a great laid-back personality. She plays well with her foster brothers and sisters. She likes to either chase them or be chased. She likes to run circles in the yard until her long legs start going faster than she does and she rolls along the ground. It is quite cute to watch. When she gets tired, she will find herself a quiet place to lay down. When it was so hot during the summer she really enjoyed soaking in the ... (Read More)kiddie pool to cool off. She likes to be loved on,m too. She especially likes me to push her collar out of the way and rub that pretty, long neck of hers. She just soaks it all up. She is camera shy, I believe. When taking pictures or videos of her she tends to walk away so I don't always capture her when she is at her best. She, too, will make some a great new addition to the family. Whoever adopts her, have her treats ready because she can jump quite high for them. I really do love this dog and spending time with her. Sally is a survivor - it is tough for us to understand how dogs wind up in the awful situations they do and many of them will possess a strong will to survive. Sally is one of those dogs; she was picked up by animal control on February 25th when she was just a baby, only 6 months old. We can only envision how she had to fend for herself alone and we wonder if she was with her siblings and that maybe they had met with an untimely death, yet Sally survived. We can all relate our struggles with hers and identify with her fight to stay alive and meet daily dangers and challenges.
